Welcome to Egmond aan den Hoef, a beautiful village with history.

‘De Hoef’ is surrounded by dunes and vast polder land with windmills. It has an old village center with beautiful facades. Picturesque: so did the many artists who stayed here. Here you can walk over the foundations of the legendary ‘Slot op den Hoef, along the moat and the castle chapel . A movie about the Middle Ages could start right here. On weekends, Gallery de Kapberg can be visited at noon, and on Sunday afternoons the stable doors of the old Hoeve Overslot are open and music can be heard.

Many hiking and biking routes pass by here and it is only a short walk to Egmond aan Zee. Parking is free in Egmond aan den Hoef.

Cycling and hiking

The number of opportunities for biking and hiking in the area is only increasing. Routes are available at Dekker and Dekker bookstore on Pompplein in Egmond aan Zee, visitor centers in the dunes of the PWN and the abbey, and some are also free. There are even opportunities to take a covered wagon through the area. On this site you will find a walk through Egmond aan Zee. When the Abbey ‘s territory at Egmond-Binnen greatly expanded, in 1129 the Abbot assigned the administration to an “advocatus” or steward, a wealthy peasant named Berwouts. The steward and his descendants lived on a farm north of the Abbey and gained increasing power. Successive stewards strengthened their farmstead into a round castle, and as early as 1170 Dodo of Egmond built the first castle. By participating in the Crusades, as a reward, stewardship is made hereditary and the territory is declared a seigniory.

Lamoral of Egmond.

By far the most famous historical figure in Egmond is Lamoraal, the fourth Count of Egmond. He is supreme army commander of the king of Spain, knight of the Golden Fleece, major landowner including in Flanders and Artois, and member of the Council of State like his friend William of Orange. His most famous deed for the Egmonden is that he had the Egmondermeer reclaimed. He stands up for the needs of the oppressed people in the low countries and then the Spanish occupier wants to get rid of him. In 1568, he was beheaded on Alva’s orders, along with the Count of Hoorne, on the Grand Place in Brussels.

Historical names

Egmond aan den Hoef is a village with a delightful historic core. Many street names recall its illustrious history such as Slotweg and Lamoraalweg. Lamoraal is the first name of the most famous Count of Egmond and that name is also found in the musical society that has existed for more than 100 years.

Count Dirk Square is named after the first count of Holland Dirk I who founded the predecessor of Egmond Abbey in 922.

In the green new housing estates north of the Slot Quarter, The Maria van Arkellaan is named after the wife of John with the Bubbles, He is one of the lords of Egmond who acquired a lot of land ownership through this marriage.

Margaretha van Weerdenburg was the wife of the very influential Manke Jan, the first Count of Egmond, and she too received a street. The Sabina van Beierenlaan is named after Lamoraal’s wife. When her husband was beheaded, she was left with eight children.

Visit to the Castle Chapel

The Slotkapel can now only be visited during church, cultural and other events such as concerts, the museum weekend, commemoration on May 4, presentation of the Egmond Culture Prize, art market, Open Monument Day and receptions. The chapel is also a popular wedding venue. During the fall and winter seasons, there are regular concerts, often on Sunday afternoons. On Egmondonline, under events calendar, you will find more information if this is the case.

Gallery de Kapberg

Eight exhibitions a year. In Egmond’s historic core, near the Slotkapel, stands a seventeenth-century chapel that once served to store hay. Wreckage from stranded ships was used for construction and can still be seen in the cap room.

In this hooded mountain you will find a gallery that has been run for more than thirty years by volunteers with great artistic ambition. About eight times a year they organize a new exhibition with art from various “disciplines,” and the artworks are beautifully displayed here.

Graphic art is always in stock. The works on display are sold, but there is no profit motive.

Canon houses. Connected to the kapberg are three cottages Slotweg 13, 15 and 17 from the 17th century, possibly from 1629. Notable features of the properties are the three brick dormers. The cottages are inhabited and cannot be visited. The whole is a national monument.

Opening hours

The kapberg is open every Friday afternoon, Saturday and Sunday from 1:30 – 5 p.m. and by appointment. Also on special days such as the art market and the Hoever Village Festival. The visit to the Kapberg is free. However, there is a box for voluntary contributions and the Kapberg also has a growing number of donors, who have certain privileges. Volunteers manage the logging mountain.
