Blue flag flies again on beaches municipality of Bergen

BERGEN NH – The municipality of Bergen once again received the Blue Flag. This is an international award given annually to beaches and marinas that are clean, safe and sustainable.

To achieve this distinction, beaches must meet a number of important criteria such as clean (swimming) water, good sanitation and a high level of safety. Being allowed to display a Blue Flag is recognition of the beach community’s efforts in this area. The Blue Flag is valid for one year: audits are conducted annually to see if beaches and marinas still meet the requirements.

Bergen City Councilman Erik Bekkering is proud of the Blue Flag. “For us it is a recognition of the quality of our beaches. We invest a lot in a high-quality product in which sustainability, nature and the environment are important components. The Blue Flag criteria is a good tool for this. Everyone in our organization therefore knows where they stand.”

Bathing water quality

Bathing water quality is an important Blue Flag criterion. It must have the EU rating of “excellent. According to Bergen County, the Blue Flag judges are pleased that more beaches can once again fly a Blue Flag because the water quality there has improved. Thus, in Bergen County, the bathing water quality also meets these stringent requirements.
