Places in the Neighborhood

Bergen aan Zee

The seaside resort of Bergen aan Zee has an atmosphere all its own, with the sea aquarium and a kilometer-long beach, with enough facilities for a comfortable day at the beach with all the trimmings, without being able to speak of excess. The annual Jazz & Sail is a now nationally known event that attracts more visitors to Bergen and Bergen aan Zee each year. In Bergen aan Zee, in good or bad weather, you can also visit the Sea Aquarium underground for a while.

Camperduin

Schoorl, Groet and Camperduin lie like a ribbon on the edge of the National Park “the Schoorl Dunes,” wide dunes covering 1800 hectares. The area is characterized by varied vegetation, several dune streams, miles of biking and hiking trails and three high climbing dunes. A characteristic Dutch polder landscape is visible on the east side. Where the row of dunes ends, the Hondsbossche Zeewering begins with the bird sanctuary “the Wells” at its foot. The development of the village is characterized by detached houses, mostly built along ditches in the early 1900s. The various cores have as shopping facilities and restaurants.

The North Sea beach at Schoorl aan Zee can only be reached by bicycle, while the beach exits at Hargen and Camperduin have parking facilities and a bus stop. Water sports enthusiasts can dock in the small harbor of Hargen, close to the sea and dunes. During the summer months, the village is abuzz with various festivities, such as the sailing, surfing and beach event “Hargen on Sail,” as well as treasure hunts for the kids.

Schoorl

Schoorl is pre-eminently the place where the lover of peace and nature feels at home. The National Park the “Schoorl Dunes” is the widest and most varied natural area along the Dutch coast. Beautiful hiking trails and bike paths that meander between dunes and polder landscape, and a beach entrance (Schoorl aan Zee) where no cars can enter. There is plenty for the kids to do as well with the highest climbing dune in the Netherlands and many special activities from the forestry in Schoorl.

Castricum

Castricum in North Holland is a tourist-attractive municipality. With tourist attractions such as the beach, the Alkmaarder-Uitgeester Lake, the forest and the dunes. With Lake Alkmaarder-Uitgeestermeer, tourists or recreationalists have the opportunity to be active on the water. Water lovers have access to the lake for swimming, surfing and canoeing through recreational beaches. The marinas allow sailing and motor boats to take to the water. There is a separate section in the lake for water skiers and speed boating. You can also rent canoes to go for a nice paddle. In addition, at and around the lake there is plenty of opportunity to have a pleasant meal and drink.

The beach is a major tourist attraction because of all the opportunities available to surfers, swimmers and sunbathers here. Even when the weather is not so nice, one can still enjoy a walk on the beach.

Limmen

In the spring months, the Hortus Bulborum, a garden where then more than 1,500 historic bulbs are in bloom in Limmen. In Limmen, the flower days in late April and early May are also very popular.

Alkmaar

In the immediate vicinity of Egmond you will find the city of Alkmaar. Alkmaar is geographically the center of the area. The busy downtown has over 400 monuments, terraces, stores, department stores, etc. Alkmaar is world famous for its weekly cheese market (only in the summer months). Furthermore, Alkmaar has several museums. Directly behind Alkmaar is the Schermer. This polder contains several attractions like the last market gardener’s house, the museum mill which you can still see in operation etc. To visit everything, a bicycle tour is recommended.
In the further surroundings of Alkmaar, there are numerous special features to visit. Broek op Langendijk is home to the oldest vegetable auction in the world and Medemblik is home to the Steam Engine Museum. You can combine a visit here with a ride to Hoorn on the steam streetcar. Also worth visiting is the Zuiderzee Museum in Enkhuizen. Here you can experience how people lived and worked around the former Zuiderzee.

Further surroundings

Further south in Beverwijk is the “Beverwijk Bazaar. This is Europe’s largest indoor market open every weekend with over 3,000 stalls and market stores divided into several markets, each with its own culture and theme. There is a Struin barn, a Black market, a Grand bazaar, a computer market and the very extensive oriental market. A little further south, you will come to Haarlem and Amsterdam. Of course, you will find all the features of a metropolis. Haarlem is well known for its various museums and about Amsterdam we don’t need to add anything here.
These are just some of the possibilities that the Egmond area offers you. Of course, all depends on the time of year in which you visit our village. But whatever the weather, there is always something to do. When it is not beach weather, you will find plenty of entertainment in the immediate area.
