In Egmond aan zee, by far the most beautiful coastal town in our country, we are the proud owners of ‘Gejut’.
This storefront breathes sea; all the jetted items are gathered there in large fish boxes.

In the night, wood, rope and plastic seek each other out and form themselves into salty presents in fantasy. All “beach trash” gets a second life. From this we make birds, fish, sculptures, moldings, a piece of jewelry, a wind chime.

Want to jute yourself and make something special in the workshop? Fancy a special family or vacation outing, corporate or bachelorette party, birthday? An unsalted team training?

About Gejut

Gejut is a store, studio, gallery, workshop space that brings every visitor closer to the sea.

In addition to one- or multi-day creative workshops, you can find unique salty ku(n)st, nautical gadgets (ship’s lamps), furniture made from drowned wood and original gifts. Gejut also provides a stage for creative sea spirits to share their knowledge or exhibit and sell their work.

Above all, it is a place to also discover for yourself how to make ‘something’ out of ‘nothing’ again…. Jettisoned objects ask questions about the past, depict the present and ask questions about tomorrow.

About myself

My name is Marianne Houthuijse.
This by far the most beautiful “derpje” in our country has a beach that offers new finds every season. Strolling along the beach and collecting everything with a wagon; nothing I’d rather do.

I scour the coastal strip between Bergen aan zee and Castricum every week in search of soil treasures. In the fall, nets, small pieces of wood and especially a lot of ship debris wash ashore. A strong east wind or a storm; you can’t make me happier.

Colorful collection

Each year the summer visitors leave behind a colorful collection of toys, flip-flops, balls and so on. From all the finds I make small and large framed works, 3D sculptures as well as jewelry from, among other things, washed up ship ropes.

Jetting literally means “to find” or “to snatch. Almost everything I use comes from the beach. But sometimes I also jut within the borders of the country; even digitally there is something to jut! Gejut’s law, however, is that no gift leaves my store without an item(s) found by the sea.

Beachcombing and the environment

There is so much to say about the environment. Other organizations can do that much better than I can. The most inspiring video I have ever seen that has challenged me to create a work of a bird You will not believe your eyes!!! – Please Share Others can tell more than I can, including, for example, the North Sea Foundation. Apart from shipwrecks and the remnants of a nice day at the beach, every day is a party at Egmond beach.

There are currently more than, shocker, 50,000 remnants of balloons on our beaches!!! Why? Because at celebrations, balloons take off en masse and blow toward the sea. Eventually, they wash back up on the beach. This fall’s counts show an average of 12 balloons or balloon debris per 100 meters of beach. With 451 kilometers of coastline, that brings you to about 54000. Of course, this is a rough estimate, but even half would be a lot.

Actually, any balloon is too much. This is because fish, marine mammals and seabirds mistake the rubber debris for food and become entangled in the strings. High time something was done about this. (Source: North Sea Foundation).

From bones and scraps of plastic, this gull boy was born; a full stomach full of plastic made her feel “full. She stopped eating and died. Images sometimes speak louder than a story.

Beachcomber works and salty gifts

Nothing leaves the store without a jetted item! Not only that is the law of “Jut. The best part is that everything is on sale in this store! From Table to display case, from lamp to cash register, from toilet to front door; I pack it and you go home with it. You can take anything but me…. someone has to jut the store anyway….
