Rooted in regional history and culture

Our story has a rich one, long history

Our story

Our story starts around 690 to Christ, when Adelbert came to our region from Ireland to Christianize the Frisians who lived here. He settled in a spot in the dunes called Egmond. Many miracles are attributed to Adelbert.
In 740 Adelbert died and was buried in a spot in the dunes, which soon became a place of pilgrimage.
In 922 the area came into the hands of Count Dirk I., the first count of Holland. Dirk I had a nunnery in Hallem (now Egmond-Binnen).

Adelbert appeared in Wilfsit's dream, one of the nuns, and told him to be exhumed and buried again in the little monastery of Hallem. Dirk had Adelbert's bones excavated and then the miracle happened.

A well welled up where they found him. Since that time, this well has been ever-present and the water was said to cure eye diseases and folly. Many miracles are attributed to Adelbert. Those wonder stories are in 980 and it appears that Adelbert was soon revered as a saint by the population. The brewery still adds water from the well to every brew, so that the miracle of Adelbert still lives on in our beers.

The Brewery brews its beers under license with the Abbey, thus has a lasting relationship with the Abbey and its principles, making it the only Dutch Benedictine abbey beer.

The wooden monastery was replaced by a stone abbey that became a center of knowledge and power. The abbey had possessions for miles around and the monks were at the basis of the country's organization. Until the year 1573. In the battle against the Spaniards, all churches and large buildings in the area were destroyed by Dirk van Sonoy. This also applies to Egmond Abbey. We know from historiography that Sonoy took the brewing kettle with him to make weaponry and thereby drive out the Spaniards.

Only from 1935 to 1950 a new abbey has been built, where so, with a break after the reformation, a community of Benedictine monks has been around for over a thousand years.
